Quote of the Week 5/25/21

Hey guys! I’m finally back with another quote of the week! Ironically, it’s a writing quote, even though I’ve been slacking off on, you know, actually writing. My brain just hasn’t been in it recently, but I’m trying to get into it! Anyway, that’s completely besides the point. Let’s get to the quote!

“Better to write for yourself and have no public, that to write for the public and have no self.” – Cyril Connolly

Come on somebody! Lately I’ve been struggling with what others would think of my books. I have this weird crippling anxiety about people hating my work and hateful criticism, and I’m a hopeless people pleaser. I think all writers (all creators in general, whether that be filmmakers, artists, etc.), have a little bit of that. Obviously, you can’t please everyone. It’s utterly impossible. But lately, thinking about my book being out in the world makes me what to keep it under lock and key forever, or simply not write at all.

But hey, if we wrote for the public, we’d never get anything done and we’d never be happy. Writing for yourself (and God!) is really all that matters. Write what is in your heart, and you’ll be happy. People might not like it, but I promise there’ll be someone who does. In the end, it won’t matter what the haters think!

What do you think about this quote? I hope it encourages you to write for yourself! God bless y’all and have a wonderful week!
