Writing Update 12/27/22

Hey guys! Blogmas is over, as you know, but that doesn’t mean the daily posts will stop! I have a bunch of content that needs to come out by the end of this month (and this year), including my Inspiring Characters, Writing Tips, and some book related content. That being said, a lot of content is still coming, and will continue to be released in the new year! For today’s post, as you can tell by the title, I’ll be giving y’all another update on how my writing is going.

I believe last time I did one of these, which was almost two months ago now, I said I was almost finished with the fourth draft of my WIP, and I was starting to outline the sequel. I did end up completely finishing the fourth draft of my WIP! I think I finished it before school let out a few weeks ago, and I decided to take a little break from it so I can come back to it in January with fresh eyes. For the fifth draft, I’m going to be editing the entire book as a physical copy, since that can help with seeing things differently than you would on a computer screen. I can’t wait to get started on this! I’m thinking it’ll probably go through two more drafts before I do anything with it in regards to trying to get it published.

While I’m taking a break from book 1, I’m continuing to work on planning book 2. I’ve been having a bit of trouble with it, which I expected. Back before this was a duology, I had the entire story crammed into one book, and it just wasn’t working out. Typically you want to go shorter with debut novels, since that makes it more likely to be published (publishers may not take a chance on really long debut novels). I decided to split it into two books, but one of the reasons I did that was because I’d have more freedom for the second half of the book, which, at the time, was rushed, confusing, and full of plot holes (because it was so rushed). I knew that when I started working on it, I was going to have trouble making everything work. Ironically, even with the freedom I have to make it a bit longer now, I’m finding that it’s still going to have quite a few chapters because of all the loose ends I need to tie up. That being said, it took me all month to work out where I wanted to go with this book, and thanks to some ideas from my friend (Christian Girl Writes!) and my sister, I was able to work out stuff to the point where I believe the majority of the plot holes are filled. I’m still working on smoothing things over, though really that’s going to happen until I get a couple drafts in. I’ve got nearly all of the chapters planned out, though there’s a few more I need to make sure fit in with the story so that it flows. But I’m making good progress! God has really been helping me with this one!

Other than that, I haven’t really been writing anything new. I did come up with an idea I would like to do for a video game (I’m an aspiring indie game developer, in case you didn’t know). I’ve worked a little on the script, but I think I want to write it out as an actual story first. More info will probably come on that soon! All I’ll say for now is that it’ll be a dystopian sci-fi…

Before I end this, I would like to point out that I actually posted a excerpt from my WIP in a Blogmas post, which you can view here if you didn’t see it. I’ve always been a little self-conscious about sharing my work from my novels, which is a little strange considering that I share my short stories all the time. I guess the novels are just different? Anyway, I obviously did end up sharing some of it, so if any of you are actually interested in seeing more about my novels, let me know and I’ll see if I can add more info in my next Writing Update!

How is your project going, whether it’s writing, drawing, etc.? Let me know in the comments below, I’d love to hear from you!

As always, God bless y’all and have a wonderful rest of your day!
