Blogmas Day 10: Christmas Writer’s Tag

I’ve got another tag for y’all! The other day I was tagged by Christian Girl Writes to do this tag that she created, so I’m excited to get into it! We had talked about her creating this tag before, so when I saw the post, I read it right away. Lo and behold, I found I was tagged! Before we get started with mine, you can read hers here!

Anyways, to start off with, I need to list the rules –

– Thank the person who tagged you and leave a link to their blog

– List the rules

– Answer the questions

– Write the questions down for reference for the next person

– Tag as many or few people as you like

With that out of the way, let’s get to the questions!

Have you ever written (or are you writing) a Christmas story? If so, what was (or is) it about?

I know I planned a couple when I was a kid, but I can’t remember if I ever got around to writing any of them. Whatever they were, I think they were really cringe and I don’t like to think about them, haha! That being said, I will not discuss them here…

Is Christmas celebrated in any of your stories?

Oof…I think yes, actually. In a really really old story of mine (that was really really bad), I believe the characters celebrated Christmas. However, I think in one of my relatively newer (but still older) stories I was planning on there being a Christmas ball or something, but I can’t remember. But the short answer is yes, my characters have celebrated Christmas before in my stories.

Is Christmas a main event/plot point in any of your stories?

Like I said, I was at least planning a story based around Christmas. I’ll say that it gave off Hallmark Christmas movie vibes, but without the romance. No clue where I got the story, but, again, I don’t like to think about my old, cringy ideas.

Are any of your characters born on Christmas?

I don’t think so, but there are a couple characters who have their birthdays near Christmas.

For Fantasy and Science-fiction writers, how do people celebrate Christmas in your worlds? Do they even celebrate Christmas?

In my WIP, they do celebrate Christmas in their world, but it’s different from country to country (and some of the countries don’t celebrate it at all, but they do in the country that the book centers around). In this fantasy country, they exchange gifts and those who are rich enough are able to decorate using candles, banners, and little trees. I haven’t fully developed how else they celebrate, so that’s something I need to work on!

If you write other types of fiction, do your characters have any special Christmas traditions?

I usually only write Sci-Fi, Dystopian, and Fantasy, so I’m not sure how to answer this question, haha! I will say my Dystopian series is set on Earth in the not-so-distant future, and they still celebrate Christmas (you know, when they aren’t being chased down by killer mutants). Maybe later in the series I might even do a Christmas part? I know in one book there’s a New Year’s Eve party, so it might be possible to squeeze a Christmas scene in there. I’ve only written the first book and most of the second one, but I have planned all the way to the end of the series pretty much. I know I mention Christmas here and there. As for traditions, one of the characters (who’s name is Seth) has a tradition in his family where he makes Christmas cookies with his mother every Christmas Eve. He gets to have one cookie before bed, then he leaves some for Santa Claus. When he got older he stopped believing in Santa, but he still goes through with this tradition!

Have five of your characters answer this question: What is your favorite Christmas dessert?

I’m not really sure what to do for this one, since I don’t know what characters to use. The characters in my WIP haven’t really had the opportunity to celebrate Christmas, so I guess I’ll go with my characters from the story I mentioned in the last question (my Dystopian series). Here are their answers:

Ash: I never really celebrated Christmas due to spending most of my life in a laboratory, but my first Christmas once I was freed we had cheesecake. I think I like that best.

Seth: Christmas sugar cookies!

Audrey: My mom always made the best fruit salad, with marshmallows and stuff.

Charity: It is a tradition in my family to make sugared walnuts. They were always my favorite.

Haydyn: I guess I’ll go with cherry pie.

Do you have any characters who DON’T celebrate Christmas? Why?

Yes, a lot. My protagonist in my WIP never celebrated Christmas because she spent her life on the streets, and she came from a country that had a holiday other than Christmas. After the events of the book, however, she only celebrates Christmas because of reasons I will not disclose, due to spoilers. However, she would prefer not to celebrate it, also due to reasons I can’t say, haha!

What is your villain’s favorite Christmas memory?

Oof…one of my WIP villains did celebrate growing up, and back when she was close with her older brother, she did have memorable moments with him that she is fond of. For a Christmas memory, she still remembers waking up early on Christmas morning to wake her brother so they could open their presents.

What is one thing your main character wanted as a kid but never got?

A family? Loving parents? Safety? She never got any of those things…

Do your characters know the Nativity story?

Some of them do, some don’t.

In your story world, what importance is placed on Christmas socially?

There isn’t really an importance placed around it among the commonfolk, because most people don’t wish to spend their money on celebrating it. However, it’s a big deal among the royalty for all the wrong reasons- just to prove that they have the means to celebrate it big time.

Have five different characters (unless you don’t have enough) answer this question: What is your favorite Christmas tradition?

I’m assuming this means characters different than the ones who answers the Christmas dessert question. I don’t have a lot of characters in the Dystopian series, and besides that, I don’t have a lot of characters who have Christmas traditions in the first place. Also, I feel like I already answered this question earlier, so we’ll just go with that one, haha!

How does one of your side characters react when they are around their family for Christmas?

I’ll go with Haydyn from my Dystopian series for this one. He’s not really side character, but he’s one of the only characters with his family left. He’s not really on good terms with his father, and he’s not really sure how he feels about his step-mother. However, he adores his little brother, so during Christmas, he usually just hangs out with him.

Have you ever written on Christmas?

I believe I have!

What is your favorite writer-related Christmas gift you’ve ever received? (It can be a book (and if so, name the book and how it related to your writing), notebooks, pens, paper, etc.)

Hmmm… I don’t usually get writing-related stuff for Christmas, though I have for my birthdays in the past. A friend of my parents (and I guess one of my friends too, haha) did gift me a beautiful leather journal for Christmas one year, so I’ll go with that.

What is your favorite writing memory which is associated with the Christmas holiday?

I can’t say I have any writing-related Christmas memories, that I can think of right now at least.

Have you ever gifted someone one of your stories for Christmas?

That feels like a weird Christmas gift if you aren’t a published author for some reason, haha! I don’t think anyone would appreciate it if I gifted them my writing, I just don’t know of anyone who loves it THAT much.

Have any Christmas novels you’ve read ever affected your writing?

Nope!

Who are you going to tag?

I don’t really know who to tag, so whoever wants to do this can go for it!
