Throwback Thursday 10/6/22

Hey guys! I kept forgetting to do these throwbacks for the last couple weeks, but they are back again! It took me a little while to figure out what I wanted to do, but I finally settled on something! Excuse the super short introduction, but let’s just get into it!

That Time Squall Met Rinoa in Final Fantasy 8

Squall dances with Rinoa (Property of Square Enix)

Although I may rant about FF8’s gameplay, it is a gorgeous game that deserves to be named as one of the greatest Final Fantasy games. The story is amazing, the characters are lovable, and the nostalgia! There is just something about the design and soundtrack of this game that made me nostalgic even the first time I ever played it.

But let’s get to the point. The ROMANCE IN THIS GAME. It’s SO beautiful! And y’all, the moment Squall and Rinoa first meet has to be one of my all-time favorite video game moments EVER. So let’s set the scene:

Balamb Garden (the school Squall goes to) put together a ball, or gala, or whatever it was. Squall, being the lone wolf that he is, is standing in the corner just chilling with himself. But then he sees Rinoa, who rather boldly demands that he’s going to like her, and that he should dance with her. He’s reluctant, but he goes with her to the dance floor.

I don’t know what it is exactly about this scene, but I can’t tell you how much I love it. Squall and Rinoa are my favorite Final Fantasy couple, and this scene made me want to root for them instantly. Also, the alternative version of Eyes on Me playing in the background just really makes it even better. A great scene to match a great game!

So what do you think of this throwback? Let me know in the comments below! And as always, God bless y’all and have a wonderful rest of your week!

  1. Never played it, but pulling up the scene I see what you mean: beautiful little vignette, done mostly with just music and movement as she patiently goads him into losing himself in the dance, while he first clumsily and reluctantly, then happily goes along with it. Very nicely done!
