Hey there Star Wars fans! It’s been awhile, hasn’t it? I’ve been incredibly busy with life, but I think I’m ready to come back now! I’ll do my best to start getting more posts out sooner. Anyway, let’s get to what this post is actually about!…
If you’re a Star Wars fan, then you know that one thing that happens on a regular basis in it is death. Not every death is heartbreaking, but there is quiet a few that were enough to turn me into a puddle! In this post, I’m going to count the top ten saddest deaths that have ever happened in Star Wars (in my opinion). So, if you’re the sensitive type like me, grab your tissues! Major, MAJOR Spoiler Warnings!!!…
Yoda, a favorite character of mine, died in the third Star Wars movie, Return of the Jedi. I think the first time I saw this movie I was at least ten years old, and I’ll never forget that moment.
How Did Yoda Die?
Did he get chopped up by a lightsaber? Get gunned down by a Stormtrooper? Nope! Yoda died simply because he was really, really old. Nine-hundred years old, to be exact. Luke Skywalker returned to Dagobah to complete his training with Yoda. Luke pleaded with his master to finish his training, but Yoda was not having it. He climbed up in his bed to die, and Luke sat there watching. Of course, the old Jedi Master let Luke know that Darth Vader really was his father and that there was, in fact, another Skywalker.
Yoda to Luke: “When gone I am, the last of the Jedi you will be. The force is strong in your family. Pass on what you have learned. There is…another…Skywalker.”
9. Savage Opress
Okay, this one got to me a little bit! In the Clone Wars season 5 episode “The Lawless”, Darth Maul’s brother, Savage Opress, met his end.
How Did Savage Die?
The Emperor decided to pay Darth Maul, who had just taken complete control over Mandalore, as visit. Darth Maul tried to express his loyalty to Sidious, but the Sith knew his old apprentice was lying. A huge lightsaber battle between Sidious, Maul, and Savage resutled from their meet. Savage was a lot less skilled than Darth Maul, and it didn’t take all that long before he was stabbed by Sidious. Darth Maul stayed by his brother’s side the whole time, devastated at what had happened. Of course, this probably added another name on Maul’s revenge list.
Savage to Maul: “Brother…I am an unworthy apprentice. I’m not like you. I never was.”
8. Darth Vader
Like I said before, I was about ten when I watched Return of the Jedi for the first time. I was actually really sad about Darth Vader’s death. I’ll never forget…the day after I watched it I sat in the old rocking chair having a complete meltdown! Now that I think of it, it might have been the first time I actually watched a character I loved die on TV, so maybe that’s why I was so traumatized? Anyway, this one really got to me the first time i watched it, and now, about seven years later, it still does.
How Did Darth Vader Die?
So, if you don’t know, Darth Vader is Luke’s father. (If you don’t know, why are you reading this? And more importantly, why don’t you even know???) Darth Vader met up with Luke, thinking he could turn him to the dark side. Well, turns out Luke doesn’t want to go to the dark side, so things got a little messy. So the Emperor freaks out and starts electrocuting Luke, aiming to kill him, of course. Darth Vader, to everyone’s surprise, betrays his master and tosses him down a shaft. However, in the process of betraying his master, he got electrocuted by Palpatine, which damaged his life support systems. With the Emperor gone, Luke proceeded to drag Vader to his ship. Vader then had Luke take off his mask. Darth Vader was redeemed from the dark side just before he died, making his death…sad.
Darth Vader: “Luke, help me take this mask off.”
Luke: “But you’ll die.”
Darth Vader: “Nothing…can stop that now. Just for once, let me look on you with me own eyes.”
Darth Vader: “You must go…leave me.”
Luke: “No! You’re coming with me! I will not leave you here, I’ve got to save you!”
Darth Vader: “You already have. Luke, you were right. You were right about me. Tell your sister…you were right.”
7. Darth Maul
I was surprisingly pretty upset about Darth Maul’s death. He was my favorite sith and it was sad to see him go. Most people think that Darth Maul died without any character development back when Obi-Wan-Kenobi chopped his legs off. This is not the truth. Darth Maul made his triumphant return to the Star Wars universe in the Clone Wars season four episode “Brothers”. He continued to to live on into Star Wars Rebels. Of course, this didn’t last very long.
How Did Darth Maul Die?
Darth Maul went to go pay an old enemy a little visit for revenge; Obi-Wan-Kenobi. He traveled to the desert world Tatooine to find him, almost losing his mind in the process (or what was was left of his mind…) Anyway, they met up and this moment was pretty intense! No, there was no drawn out battle with the beloved song “Duel of the Fates” playing. They stood facing each other with their lightsabers ignited. The music went faster and faster until…Kenobi blocks three times before landing the killing blow. Darth Maul collapses into his enemy’s arms with the hope that he, and Kenobi, will both be avenged.
Maul: “Tell me…is he the Chosen One?”
Kenobi: “He is.”
Maul: “He will…avenge us…”
Okay, so yeah, every major Clone Trooper death was sad. I mean, look at Echo, Tup, or Hardcase, or what about *shudders* poor Gregor? But I’m going to have to say that Fives was the worst for me. I was completely shocked, because Fives was a clone that was ALWAYS there. And he was literally Captain Rex’s best friend! The way he was killed off just didn’t do him just! Okay, here I go, starting to rant…
How Did Fives Die?
In the beginning of season six in the Clone Wars series, a Clone Trooper named Tup had a very serious issue; he killed a Jedi. Upon investigation, it turned out that Tup had a chip in his brain that malfunctioned. Little did the Republic know, these chips were going to be the things that started Order 66. Five found out that he had a chip too, and had it removed. After the removal of his chip, Five became paranoid and wanted to tell Chancellor Palpatine the situation. Unfortunately, Fives found himself on the run when he is accused of trying to assassinate the chancellor. Rex and Anakin Skywalker met with Fives, but another Clone Trooper named Fox. Fives, not wanting to be captured, tried to defend himself. Rex and Anakin were horrified when Fox shot Fives right then and there. Rex stayed by his friend’s side as he died, devastated at losing a brother.
Fives: “This…it’s bigger than any of us…than anything I could have imagined. I-I never meant to…I only wanted to do my duty….”
Rex: “Brother…Fives. Stay with me, Fives! Fives!”
Fives: “The mission…the nightmares…they’re…finally over.”
Rogue One is an amazing movie. Like, I was really surprised of how good it was. I’ve probably watched it a hundred times! But one thing I can never get over is how many characters died in it. Sure, they kind of had to die, but still. Every death was horrible, but the one that hit me the hardest was K2-S0. I LOVE droids, okay? I get super attached to droid characters really fast. So I was literally in tears when this sarcastic, wonderful droid died. It. Was. Awful.
How Did K2-S0 Die?
K2-S0 was on a very important mission with his fellow rogues; stealing the Death Star plans! K2’s job was to guard the door and help Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor get the plans. While he was doing this, a whole lot of Stormtroopers came barging in the room. He was able to fend them off for awhile, but soon there was far to many for one droid to handle. To save his friends, K2 locked the door before being shot to pieces.
K2-S0: “Climb! You can still send the plans to the fleet. If they open the shield gate you can broadcast from the tower. Locking the volt door now.”
Cassian: “Kay? Kay! No!”
4. Han Solo.”
Who could ever forget this death? This was like, the king of all Star Wars movie deaths. I saw it coming a mile away, but I was still quiet a mess in the theater! Han Solo’s death was really just…tragic. I mean, the whole story is tragic.
How Did Han Solo Die?
Han Solo had gone with Chewbacca, Rey, and Finn to see about shutting gown Starkiller base’s shields. While he was there, he ran into his son, Kylo Ren (formally Ben Solo). The two had a talk with Rey, Finn, and Chewbacca standing by to watch. Han tried to bring his fallen son back to the light side, but it didn’t work out quiet the way he wanted it to. Kylo Ren stabbed his father right then and there. It was a horrible thing to watch. Han and Kylo were standing on a bridge thing when he’d been stabbed, so he fell off the bridge down into…well, whatever was down there.
Han Solo: “Leave here with me, come home. We miss you.”
Kylo Ren: “I’m being torn apart. I want to be free of this pain. I know what I have to do, but I don’t if I have the strength to do it. Will you help me?”
Han Solo: “Yes, anything.”
(Kylo proceeds to stab Han)
Kylo Ren: “Thank you.”
3. Del Meeko
I LOVED Battlefront II’s story mode. The game-play, the characters, the voices, the music, all of it! But then there was that ending… First off, I was losing my mind during the part where you play as Kylo Ren and journey through Del Meeko’s memory. It was insane! But shortly after this, Del was killed. And I cried. Let me explain. Del Meeko first appeared in Christie Golden’s Inferno Squad. (You can read my review for this book right here at Old Jho’s!) Del became an immediate favorite of mine! So when I played the end of the game, I was devastated! I don’t know what’s worse: that he died or the way he died…
How Did Del Meeko Die?
A few decades after the Battle of Jakku, it is revealed that Del married his good friend Iden Versio and the two of them had a daughter. Kylo Ren believes that Del had a piece of the map to Luke Skywalker with him and captured him aboard Del’s ship, the Corvus. Kylo Ren tortures Del, and he eventually breaks to reveal that Lor San Tekka took the map to Bayora. Kylo leaves with this knowledge and an old friend joins the scene. Gideon Hask. Real quick, Gideon was like a brother to Del in Inferno Squad. Of course, they became enemies in the middle of Battlefront II, but this scene was just…hard to watch. Anyway, Gideon laments about how Del gave up everything for a simple life before shooting his point blank a few times. It. Was. Awful.
Gideon: “How are you, Del?”
Del: “Spare me the pleasantries, Hask. We both know how this ends.”
Gideon: “Yeah, and you don’t get to be brave! Because you are not a soldier anymore. Look at you, you’re a coward. You traded in your weapon for what? Fatherhood? Hauling cargo on the Corvus? You know Iden may have betrayed me, but you, Del, you let me down!”
Del: “We all change, don’t we? Eh? Look at you. You used to be dead.”
Gideon: “Well, Iden can do just about anything except kill me, apparently.”
Del: “Hask. Gideon! Please. Don’t go after her. It won’t end well for you. Please.”
2. Kanan Jarrus
And here’s another one that made me cry. I knew that this moment was coming the instant I saw Kanan back in season one. But nothing could have prepared me for it. Kanan’s death was one perfectly executed scene with amazing music and animation. It was beautiful, but heartbreaking. It was one death that I’ll never forget.
How Did Kanan Jarrus Die?
Kanan had gone on a rescue mission to save Hera from the Empire’s clutches. He saved her, of course, but that’s when things got bad. Sabine and Ezra were busy getting a ship to escape in and Kanan and Hera were supposed to meet them. Kanan brought Hera to the top of a fuel depot, where she finally confessed her love for him. The two of them kiss and Ezra and Sabine arrive with a ship. They’re saved! Not exactly. Governor Pryce arrives with a few AT-AT Walkers and orders for the fuel depots to be fired at. Kanan pushes Her onto the ship just in time for the depot to go up in flames. Kanan uses the force to hold the fire back long enough for his friends to get away. Hera rushes in to help him, but he holds her back and force-pushes her back into the ship. He looks back at her and regains his sight so he can see her one last time before he uses the last ounce of his strength to push the ship away. Kanan dies in the fire, but managed to destroy the entire fuel depot and finish Hera’s original mission.
Hera: “Kanan! I know what to say now…I love you.”
Kanan: “Must be the truth serum talking.”
Hera: “No. It’s me…all me.”
1. Iden Versio (Meeko)
I did not see this one coming at all. There I was, playing Battlefront II’s Resurrection DLC, completely unaware of what was about to happen. I thought that Del’s death was something, this one really got to me! To this day I don’t know why Iden’s death made me so upset, but it did. And it still does! I literally can’t go back to watch it! It makes me cry every. Single. Time.
How Did Iden Versio Die?
Like I said, Iden had married Del Meeko and had a daughter, Zay. After the news of Del’s death, Iden went with Zay and Shriv to kill Gideon aboard his ship, the Retribution. While they’re on the ship, they find out about the First Order’s Project Resurrection. Iden hoped to rip the ship out of hyperspace after downloading the project while Shriv went to find a way out of there. Iden and Zay were working on the hyperdrive when Gideon showed up. Iden was able to defeat Gideon by shooting him, causing him to fall of the catwalk they were on. (I used to like Gideon when I started reading Inferno Squad, but by the end of the book he was definitely not one of my favorites. Still, this scene was also sad in the fact that Iden just killed her former best friend. Like, they literally grew up together.) Anyway, Iden and Zay walk away seemingly completely fine. They wait in the control room until the hyperdrive blows up and the ship is pulled out of hyperspace nearby Starkiller Base. (Which, by the way, is about to explode.) Then comes the unexpected. It turns out that Gideon was able to shoot Iden, and now she’s dying. Zay was by her mother’s side as she died.
Zay: “Okay mom, you need to get some help. Come on, come on.”
Iden: “No, no, no, Zay. Zay, stop. It’s too late. It’s too late. Listen, you…you need to get Dio to the Resistance. Do you understand?”
Zay: “No. What are you talking about? No.”
Iden: “It’s gonna be okay.”
Zay: “No it isn’t. I need you. How are you so calm right now?”
Iden: “I’m scared. Just more afraid of failing than dying. And I have hope in you. Listen…listen. We fight so others can live. And if we die, it better be for the same reason. You understand? … I love you.”
Zay: “I love you, mom.”
Iden: “I wish you could see what I see…”
So that’s all of them! What do you think about this list? Is there any that should have been on it? Or one that shouldn’t have? What’s your list? Let me know in the comments below! Now, I must go empty my trash can, because it’s full of tissues…
