It’s time for another trailer breakdown! Last Monday, during Monday night football, a brand new trailer was released for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. It was one of the most amazing trailers I have ever seen. And the music? Just fantastic. Before we begin, you can watch the trailer below…
We start with Kylo Ren standing there looking through a glass window at what appears to be some sort of factory. The next few scenes consists of the new AT-M6 Walkers, which look amazing, what I thing is Ren leading Flametroopers through a very strange place, and Ren picking his lightsaber up off of the ground with what I think is two Praetorian Guards in the background. We hear Snoke’s voice say, “When I found you, I saw raw, untamed power….and beyond that, something truly special. I am not exactly sure whether of not Snoke is talking to Kylo Ren or Rey. Next we see Rey activate Anakin Skywalker’s blue lightsaber. We good a good view of Anch-To. Rey brings the lightsaber to Luke, and he takes it with his hands, one being metal. Rey walks through a creepy looking place and we see her looking at a bunch of scroll looking things, which are also being held in a strange place. Rey practices some lightsaber techniques on a cliff with Luke watching her. In reaction to Rey’s power, the ground cracks, with Luke in total shock. Through these scenes, Rey says, “Something inside me has always been there. And now it’s awake. And I need help.” The next is a scene that we saw in the previous trailer; Rey using the force to move tiny pebbles around. Luke says, “I’ve seen this raw strength only once before.” We see Luke’s metal hand come up from the wreckage of what was surely his Jedi temple. Luke also falls to his knees as his temple burns. “It didn’t scare me enough then,” Luke continues. “But it does now.” Rey watches something in font of her with a look of despair.
Next, We see Kylo Ren. He looks at his helmet once before smashing it into the wall. We see his new ship, the Silencer, which looks incredible flying around destroying Resistance ships. He says, “Let the past die…kill it, if you have too.” Now comes the killer part! Ren closes in on the what must be the main Resistant ship, the one which General Leia, his mother, is on. Ren continues with, “It’s the only way to become who you’re meant to be.” He struggles to pull the trigger that would result in his mother’s death. The next few scenes are the Millennium Falcon being chased by TIE Fighters through what looks to be the same place at the beginning of the trailers, Chewbacca with one of those adorable little Porg things that everyone seems to be obsessed with, and more First Order and Resistance ships in battle. We see Poe in two different ships, his X-wing and some other larger ship. “We are the spark,” Poe says. “That will light the fire that will burn down the First Order. Finn, in an First Order uniform yells “Come on!” as he battles with Captain Phasma. There’s more footage of space battles, and we see BB-8 getting electrocuted in the back of an X-wing (I’m sure he’ll be fine!).
Luke Is lying on the ground talking to someone, most likely Rey. We see another new Star Wars creature; beautiful crystal wolf looking things, and General Leia watching as a door closes in front of her. Luke says, “This is not going to go the way you think!” Rey falls into a body of water and struggles to get out. Rey stands to her feet in front of Luke. We see Finn dressed up as a First Order officer, either for disguise or he’s decided to go back to the Resistance’s enemies, a large hanger full of First Order troopers, the AT-M6s, a TIE get shot down and, finally Supreme Leader Snoke in the flesh! He says, “Fulfill your destiny!” We see Snoke torturing Rey in some way.
The final scene is one that has everyone asking the question; Will Rey turn to the Dark Side? Rey says, “I need someone to show me my place in all this.” Kylo Ren hold out his hand, showing that he wants Rey to join him. Now, I have feeling that these are two different scenes, since the backgrounds are different for Rey and Ren. But the question of whether Rey will turn to the Dark Side or not still stands.
So the trailer has us asking a lot of questions! Hopefully, most of them will be answered when Star Wars: The Last Jedi releases in theaters on December 15, 2017. What did you think about the trailer? Did you catch anything unusual that I did not address? Let me know in the comments!
