At last, the long awaited 2017 Star Wars Celebration has arrived! Today in Orlando, Florida we saw some pretty amazing things happen. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend personally, but with the kindness and hard work of the people at Star Wars.com, I was able to watch the live stream of the biggest Star Wars event of the year. This wasn’t any ordinary celebration though. Why? Because this year Star Wars turns a whopping 40 years old! Let’s go through some of the major highlights of the first day of Star Wars Celebration…
The Star Wars 40th Anniversary Panel
To start things off, The first panel was a look back to all of the good memories that has taken place over the course of 40 years. Hosted by Warwick Davis (Wicket from Return of the Jedi), this panel was amazing. We saw special guests like Kathleen Kennedy (CEO of Lucasfilms) George Lucas (the creator of Star Wars), Dave Filoni (supervising director for Star Wars Rebels), Ian Mcdiarmid (the Emperor), Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C-3P0), Billy Dee Williams ( Lando Calrissian), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Billie Lourd (Carrie Fisher’s daughter) and surprise, surprise Harrison Ford (Han Solo). Hopefully, I’m not forgetting anyone from that list. This panel ended with a special tribute to the late Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), who sadly passed away last year in December, and John Williams and an entire orchestra playing some of the most beloved songs from Star Wars, including Princess Leia’s theme. This was a panel that will be unforgettable.
Animated Fates And Unexpected Fates Panel
Have you ever wondered where Ahsoka Tano came from? Or what about Captain Rex and Cad Bane? Well this panel is just for you! We got to listen to some pretty awesome speakers; Dave Filoni and Pablo Hidalgo. They gave us some insight on where the ideas for Ahsoka, Darth Maul and other legendary Clone Wars characters came from. We even got a sneak peak of an old clip from some of the unfinished Clone Wars episodes which hinted at what might have been the fate for one of the most beloved bounty hunters, Cad Bane. Not to mention all of the wonderful old concept art that they allowed us to look at. This panel was very interesting and enlightening.
Ian Mcdiarmid’s Tales From The Dark Side Panel
In this panel, Ian Mcdiarmid shared with us what it was like to become the terrifying Emperor. It was very interesting to hear all of the stories he had to tell about how he was recruited to play one of the most well known Siths in Star Wars. This panel was not one to miss.
Ray Park’s Prepare To Be Mauled Panel.
Ah yes, and panel about my favorite Star Wars character, Darth Maul. Ray Park, who played Maul in The Phantom Menace, shared some stories about how he was recruited and what it was like to act out the Zabrak Sith. Ray Park showed us some pretty awesome martial arts that he had learned, and ended the panel with a hilarious reenactment of Maul’s apparent death at the end of The Phantom Menace. If you are like me and love Darth Maul, this panel is perfect for you.
So those are my highlights for day one of the Star Wars Celebration! With all of the excitement that today held, I can’t imagined what they have planned for tomorrow. If you missed out on any of these amazing panels, you can watch them on Star Wars.com’s youtube channel. What was your favorite part of Star Wars Celebration day one? Let me know in the comments!
